How the hourly to salary formula works

Yearly salary = hourly wage × hours per week × weeks you work. For a full-time job that means 40 h a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 h in a year.

Take the example wage of $25.00 an hour. Multiply it by the hours in a full-time year and you get $52,000.00 a year, before taxes. The same steps work for any wage. Change the hourly rate, the weekly hours, or the weeks, and the total moves with them.

Converting hourly pay to monthly and weekly pay

Start with the yearly amount, then divide it by the number of pay periods.

Monthly pay is an average. Some months have more working days than others, so an hourly paycheck can differ from the average even when your rate has not changed.

Adjusting the result for part-time hours

The table assumes a full-time week. If you work fewer hours, swap in your real weekly hours. Multiply the hourly wage by your weekly hours, then by the weeks you work in the year. The result is the yearly pay for your schedule, and you can divide it into months or weeks the same way as above.

Some people also use this to compare hours. A lower wage with more hours can add up to more than a higher wage with fewer hours, so it helps to put both on a yearly basis.

Accounting for unpaid time off and holidays

Paid vacation and paid holidays are already part of a salaried year. Unpaid time is not. If you take unpaid weeks off, remove them from the weeks you work before you multiply. The yearly total goes down, and the monthly and weekly figures become averages across the full year.

The same goes for a job that pays only for hours worked. Any week with no hours adds nothing, so a slow season lowers the yearly figure even when the hourly rate stays the same.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried offer

To compare fairly, turn the hourly wage into a yearly amount using the hours and weeks you really expect to work. Then set it next to the salary. A few things can tip the comparison:

If you freelance and bill by the hour, the Invoice can help you turn hours into a clear bill. For monthly costs such as rent that start or stop partway through a month, the Rent Proration Calculator splits the amount by days.

Questions

How do you convert hourly to salary?

Multiply your hourly wage by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you work each year. A full-time year of 40 h a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 h, so $25.00 an hour comes to $52,000.00 a year before taxes.

How do you convert an hourly wage to a monthly salary?

Work out the yearly pay first, then divide by 12. At $25.00 an hour and full time, that is about $4,333.33 a month.

How much is an hourly wage after taxes?

The calculator shows pay before taxes. What you take home depends on your filing status, where you live, and any deductions, so it will be lower than the figures here.

Does the calculator include overtime?

No. It assumes the same hours every week. For weeks with extra hours, use the overtime calculator and add the result to your regular pay.

How do you calculate salary from hourly pay for part-time work?

Use your actual weekly hours instead of a full-time week. Multiply the hourly wage by those hours, then by the weeks you work in the year.

How does unpaid vacation change a yearly salary?

Each unpaid week is left out of the yearly total. Take the weeks you actually get paid for, not the full year, and multiply by your weekly pay.

Not legal or tax advice. Results are estimates before taxes and assume the same hours every week.
